How It All Started

I'm not an architect, I have no credentials from prestigious carpentry schools, nor have I served any kind of apprenticeship in fine woodworking. I'm just a guy who bought a new house devoid of moldings. No big baseboards, no crown moldings, no grand door surrounds. Just 1700 sq ft of drywall and carpet. I at least knew that I wanted my new home to have the same kind of charm of my aunt's Craftsman home in Royal Oak, Michigan.

I knew I couldn't afford to have this kind of work contracted. So I spent about $15.00 on a cheap, yellow plastic miter saw. With my new tool I went to work with some moldings I bought from Home Depot, and set about transforming my half bath with a small crown molding, a 3-1/2" ogee baseboard and a small chair rail.

After much profanity and creating a large pile of scrap molding, I stood back to look at my handy work. With the yellow wall paint still drying, I thought to myself, "these moldings just aren't big enough!"

That was back in 1995. What was once a weekend hobby has become my passion and occupation for the last 8 years. The power of properly designed, installed and painted architectural details in your home is intoxicating. The architectural details need not be fancy, but they do need to be big. And so I made it my mission to discover what architectural details provided the greatest visual impact for the least amount of money.

It pains me to keep my trade secrets close to my chest. Now I want to share what I've learned over the years with you. And so I've condenced my design and installation philosophies into the iNeedCrown concept. I hope that you will check back now and then and see how the iNeedCrown.com concept matures.

Cheers, Ken
